Classic Movies – Laura by Hannah Howe

Laura is a romantic detective story with an original plot. It is also one of my favourite films. The film was released in 1944 with a storyline adapted from Vera Caspary’s (1899 – 1987) novel.
The plot centres on hard-boiled detective Mark McPherson and his attempts to solve the murder of Laura Hunt, whose face has been rendered unrecognisable after a shotgun blast. The suspects are wealthy snobs who annoy McPherson as much as he annoys them. Apart from their wealth, the one thing these suspects have in common is that they all loved Laura.

Melanie P Smith Interviewed by Rachael Wright

Utah native Melanie P. Smith is a woman as varied and driven at the characters in her novels. After completing a Postgraduate certification in Conflict Resolution and Negotiation from the University of Utah she went towork for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department. After serving most of her career in the Special Operations Division she retired in 2016.

Melanie writes criminal suspense and police procedurals because, “that’s what I know.” But her first book was a paranormal romance and she’s expanded into fantasy as well.
